Tenant protections specific to LA County
On top of statewide rights, many LA County renters have extra layers of local protection worth knowing about.
-
City of LA: Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO)
Covers most buildings with a certificate of occupancy before October 1, 1978. Caps annual rent increases and requires a legally valid reason before ending a tenancy.
-
City of LA: Citywide Just Cause Ordinance (JCO)
Since January 2023, just-cause eviction protection extends to nearly every residential rental in the city of LA — including units built after 1978 and many single-family rentals — not just RSO-covered buildings. No-fault evictions generally require relocation assistance.
-
City of LA: Notice of Right to Counsel
Since August 2025, LA landlords must give tenants a Notice of Right to Counsel at the start of a tenancy and attach one to any eviction notice. A missing notice can be worth raising with an attorney.
-
Other cities within the county
Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Inglewood, and several other LA County cities have their own local rent control or just-cause ordinances that can go further than city-of-LA or state rules. Tell us which city your unit is in and we'll tell you what applies.
